The free one day first aid course, provided by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sabah branch, received an encouraging response when 50 participants turned up at the MRCS Sabah branch headquarters yesterday.
The attendance exceeded MRCS expectations of 30 participants and showed that members of the public were eager to learn about basic first aid that could possibly save lives in case of an accident at home. Among the 50 attendees were businessmen, kindergarten teachers, civil servants and university students.
This was the first course launched under the ‘First Aid in Every Home’ program by the MRCS Sabah branch in conjunction with the its welfare month. The purpose of the course was to provide basic knowledge of first aid that can be administered in the case of accidents happening at home.
Participants were taught how to perform CPR, handle fractures, wounds, bleeding, hemorrhage, electric shocks, food poisoning, insect bites, drowning and choking.
For Christopher Chiu, 39, who works in the Road Transport Department, the course was an enlightening experience. “I learned a lot from the course, especially the new methods of administering first aid,” said Chiu who was a former member of the MRCS while he was in school. I’m really happy that I came today and I think those who are here have not wasted their time,” he said.
Chiu said that this was a good course for schools and government agencies and should be held more often with better publicity next time. He even brought along his nine-year old son, Kenneth, to learn about first aid.
Participants were awarded a certificate of participation presented by MRCS Sabah branch director, Asrin Abd Kadir and secretary of the Training Committee, Eddie Chua.
According to Chua, they will be conducting another course at Kota Belud on August 7 in conjunction with the MRCS Sabah branch youth camp.
